Location

Amelia, with an altitude of 405 meters (above see level) and about 12,000 inhabitants, is currently one of the most important cities in South Umbria. Its history is immemorial: the first settlement dates back to the 10th century before Christ. Its powerful polygonal walls (dates back to the 6th - 5th century b.C.) are vestiges of this ancient pre-Roman civilization.

In the Roman period Amelia was crossed, from one end to the other, by the ancient road Via Amerina; which joined Vejo to Chiusi by way of Todi and Perugia. It was made a Municipium and had a period of prosperity, as proved by many archeological finds, which keep on being descovered every now and then.

Even at the beginning of the 21th century, Amelia was a municipality. It always supported the Papal States during the fight between the papacy and the empire; in 1240 this preference costed Amelia a pillage by the Emperor Frederick II.

On the 15th and 16th centuries Amelia gave birth to famous personalities such as Cardinal Angelo Geraldini, who, as father confessor of Queen Elisabeth of Spain, intercided for Christopher Columbus to get the famous caravelles.

The economy of Amelia region has always been based on agriculture. Its inhabitants are showing devotion for the land for centuries; and the land has always been the main livelihood, especially in former times. The features of local land and the climate mildness facilitated the olive growning. Olive trees have always been planted, in various species (moraiolo, leccino, rajo, frantoio), without any anticryptogamic substance, due to the nature of the land, which has no parasitics. This enables a completely natural growning. The oil produced in this region is the result of a mix of olives of these various species.
